Gabriella Razzano

OpenUp

Gabriella Razzano is the co-founder and Executive Director of OpenUp, a social impact technology organisation based in Cape Town. She is pursuing a Law PhD in data governance and trust infrastructure, and is a Doctoral Fellow in the Trust Programme at WISER, the University of Witwatersrand. She is a Senior Atlantic Fellow on Social and Income Inequality at the London School of Economics, a Member of the Advisory Board of the South African AI Association, and an Advisor to the African AI Observatory. She is a human rights activist, lawyer, and researcher, specialising in themes of data and AI governance, digital rights and inequalities. She clerked with Justice Yacoob of the Constitutional Court, has worked with domestic and international non-governmental partners on a variety of law and research project, and was formerly the Executive Director of a legal non-profit, the Open Democracy Advice Centre. She has contributed to the drafting of several regional instruments, such as the African Model Law on Access to Information, the African Declaration on Internet Rights and Freedoms, and the African Union Data Policy Framework. She was an Internet Governance Fellow, an alumni of the International Visitor Leadership Program (Global Digital Leader), and one of the Mail & Guardians Young South Africans, 2013.
